Math & Science Faculty

Scott Gunderson

Scott has been teaching math and science for many years in Chico schools and elsewhere and began teaching engineering when he came to Inspire. After getting his teaching credential from San Diego State University in physical sciences, mathematics, and computers, Scott and his wonderful and talented wife, Denise, arrived in Chico in 1991 without jobs, apartment, or contacts and $100 in the bank. They have never regretted the move. Their son, Tristan, is a graduate of Inspire and is pursuing a career in engineering while fostering his love of theater. Besides a diverse love of learning that allows him to play a mean game of Trivia, Scott is passionate about music. He plays upright bass and has an on-again, off-again relationship with a couple local bands you probably have never heard nor seen and wishes he could call himself a singer. He sang barbershop for seven years and even appeared in a few local musical productions. Scott and his family love to travel and spend a lot of vacation time at music festivals. Desperately believing that education is the key to a hopeful future for this crazy world, Scott has developed and researched a lot of ideas about quality education that he tries to bring to Inspire's students.

Alan Kauffman is a Chico local with a passion for teaching Math and Science in creative and fun ways. He is extremely lucky to be part of the Math, Science and Engineering departments at Inspire as these three disciplines complement each other very well. In May 2014, Alan married Sheri Gitelson (now Kauffman) who works in the English department. When not at school, Alan enjoys rock climbing, yoga, backpacking, gardening, cooking, and riding his bike all over Chico.

Daniel Marcy

Daniel loves teaching! He comes from a family of educators, his parents are teachers, two of his older brothers are teachers, his younger sister wants to be a teacher and his Grammi worked at a high school for 38 years! It’s in his blood!  Daniel is from Oroville and decided after high school he wanted to go to Chico State to become a High School Math Teacher.  He received an Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics Education and then did his student teaching at Inspire during the 2015-16 school year.  He was then able to stick around to become an actual teacher there.  “I knew after the first couple of weeks that Inspire was where I was meant to be” said Daniel.  Outside of the classroom you can find Daniel in Bidwell park or hiking a mountain somewhere.  He also loves all things sports and has been known to play basketball with students during lunch.  Daniel loves teaching Math at Inspire and is excited to continue to grow as a teacher at such a wonderful school and with truly amazing colleagues!

Malina Olson

Malina was born and raised in Durham, a little farming town outside of Chico. If you ever make it out there be sure not to blink or you may miss it! Malina got her degree in biological Sciences with an emphasis in microbiology and biotechnology at UC Davis. She gained hands on laboratory experience working at Novazymes biotech in Davis, and RH Phillips winery in Esparto. She knew her true passion was in teaching science, so she returned to Chico to get her teaching credential at Chico State. After receiving her credential, she taught at various schools in Butte and Glenn county,  and even taught one semester in Dublin, Ireland. During that time she earned credentials in Chemistry and Geosciences. In addition to teaching, she is also dedicated to raising her two young girls, Avery (2 ) and Sidney (3 months and growing fast). Malina has found a wonderful home at Inspire and is looking forward to her second year!

Danielle Reynolds

Danielle spent several years working as a facilitator, teacher, and trainer in the Developmental Disabilities field in Sacramento, CA. It was during this time she realized her passion for teaching. She moved to Chico to be closer to her now husband, Joe, and pursue a Bachelor’s degree and Teaching Credential in Mathematics. Danielle has been happily teaching Mathematics and Engineering at Inspire since 2011, and is thrilled to share her enthusiasm for Mathematics with students. Outside the classroom, Danielle enjoys life by traveling, taking photographs, cooking, gardening, kayaking, and just about anything that gets her outside with her family.
