The presence of supportive adults in LGBTQ+ teens’ lives can make an incredible difference in their mental health and well-being. That’s why it is important for all of us to create safe and affirming spaces for the teens in our lives to be who they are. On Tuesday, January 26, join Inspire School of Arts & Sciences for a panel webinar designed to support you in being an identity-affirming parent to a transgender teen. Attendees will learn skills and tools from experts in the field for offering support and acceptance to teens who identify as transgender or are questioning their gender identity, including some of the risks facing transgender teens who do not have affirming adults in their lives. You will also hear firsthand experiences and advice from parents of transgender teens.

This webinar is part of the Parenting Teens Educational Series. The panel will include Julie Nilsson, retired teacher, LGBTQ+ advocate; Dr. Erin Whitney, Assistant Professor in the School of Education at Chico State; and Cindy and Andy Pickett, loving parents of an LGBTQ+ child who is now in their twenties. Participants will have the opportunity for Q&A following the session.

About Our Panelists

▪ Julie Nilsson: Julie is a long time resident of Chico, a retired elementary school teacher, and a parent of a transgender teen. She currently works with the local LGBTQ+ center to provide education to teachers, parents, and community members on helping educate organizations on transgender issues.
▪ Erin Whitney: Dr. Erin Whitney is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at Chico State. Before coming to this role, she was a special education teacher and school leader in a variety of rural and urban schools. Dr. Whitney conducts research and facilitates professional development in areas of inclusive education, with a sustained commitment to making schools safe and supportive for students with disabilities, students of color, and LGBTQ+ students.
▪ Cindy & Andy Pickett: Cindy & Andy Pickett have two grown children, plus a number of other youngsters who have enriched their lives, whom they lovingly call their bonus children. They were introduced to the LGBTQ+ community when their teenage son came out, and found a tremendous amount of love, support, and encouragement within this community. Now, they help support other parents in the journey to acceptance and love for their transgender children.
